Researchers hope that warning drivers in time will reduce or eliminate accidents caused by driver error. Two main systems are being developed to address this problem. The first is called adaptive cruise control, and is designed to monitor the distance between the car directly ahead and, when engaged, control the accelerator and brake in order to maintain a safe cushion of space.
